I create art to capture or subjuage, and perhaps understand my fears,
questions, and anxieties. This process starts out very intuitively
and is allowed to mutate, develop, and eventually evolve into images
and objects.

Intermundia
Artist Statement
Some of my first memories revolve around making
artwork. I turned to drawing at an early age to help make sense of the
questions and fears that I had about the world around me. Since those
early beginnings, my artwork has evolved into using several different
processes to express those concerns. I am constantly interested in the
communication of ideas and the investigation of materials and processes
to achieve those means. I still have a love of drawing but have found
myself increasingly drawn to the three dimensional and the making of objects.
Currently I work in the realms of drawing/painting, printmaking, and sculpture
combining unorthodox approaches. My artwork is created working very intuitively
from the unconscious allowing materials and marks to organically develop
and eventually evolve into images and objects. My art is very closely
connected with the trials tribulations of my everyday living, and serves
as a kind of self-exorcism. In the same manner that ancient cultures sought
to magically capture the spirit of their prey or enemies, I create art
to capture or subjugate, and perhaps understand my fears, questions, and
anxieties. Exploring and channeling these different areas of the unconscious
results in powerful confrontations with a variety of segments of the self,
some of which are unknown or repressed. This sometimes treacherous engagement
gives birth to universal concerns that have occupied humankind throughout
its existence such as separation, fear, the dualities of human nature,
and relationships with individuals and the world around us. Another important
aspect of the work is the emphasis on metamorphosis, regeneration, transformation
and a realization that all things are connected.
This
consciousness of the many states and condition of being human extends
to the physical, psychological, and spiritual. There is a mysterious,
mystical quality to the work and several of the objects deal with the
power of belief and I carry a strong conviction that objects can hold
power. Technically, it is important to me that the quick, reflexive nature
of my creative process be evident in the work both in its construction
and appearance.
The title of the show, Intermundia (Latin for the spaces between worlds),
is a broad term that is meant to relate to the ambiguous space between
positions; the space between the unseen and the physical, between despair
and abundance, between our conscious world and the unconscious, between
normality and madness, between the beautiful and the grotesque, between
life and death, etc… It is an often unnoticed, aspect of our daily
existence.
In viewing these works, It is my intention that the viewer take a moment
to reflect and perhaps peer deeper than the surface level of many of these
works. The motivations, desires, fears, instincts, and dreams that lay
beneath the surface level are what truly unite us as human beings. Eventually
one emerges to realize that we all have much more in common than we think.
